President Mahama Directs Chief Justice Torkornoo to Respond to Removal Petitions

Accra, Ghana – March 30, 2025 – President John Mahama has officially instructed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to submit a preliminary response within 10 days regarding petitions seeking her removal from office.

Details of the Directive

πŸ“Œ The instruction was outlined in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.

πŸ“Œ Three petitions, dated February 14 and March 17, 2025, were filed against the Chief Justice, alleging misconduct and abuse of power.

πŸ“Œ On March 24, 2025, President Mahama forwarded the petitions to Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State, for consultation as required by Article 146(6) of the Constitution.

πŸ“Œ The Council of State consented to the process on March 27, 2025, after which the petitions were officially sent to Chief Justice Torkornoo for her comments.

Leak of the Chief Justice’s Letter

⚠️ The President also raised concerns over a leaked letter from the Chief Justice, dated March 27, 2025, which circulated on social media before reaching his office.

πŸ“„ The leaked letter was reportedly shared alongside another addressed to the President of the Supreme Court, the President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges, and the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

🚨 In response to the leak, the President’s office has marked all documents as β€œrestricted” to prevent further unauthorized disclosures.

Assurance of Due Process

βœ… Despite concerns over the leak, President Mahama assured Chief Justice Torkornoo that due process would be followed and that she would be given a fair opportunity to respond.

πŸ“Œ The Chief Justice’s response will be critical in facilitating further consultations between the President and the Council of State as the legal process unfolds.

πŸ“’ More updates are expected in the coming days as the deadline approaches.
