Kufuor Laments Exclusion From NPP Affairs, Raises Alarm Over Party Unity

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed deep concern over being sidelined by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a party he helped lead to victory and prominence.

Speaking during a courtesy call by flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong, the statesman openly questioned the actions of the party’s current leadership, lamenting what he described as a pattern of exclusion and disregard.

“I don’t understand why my own party, the NPP, has sidelined me,” Kufuor said.

The former president, who governed Ghana between 2001 and 2008, is widely respected for his role in strengthening democratic governance and steering economic reforms. However, he noted that despite his legacy and continued loyalty, he has been left out of key party activities, including a recent meeting of the NPP National Council, one of the highest decision-making bodies within the party.

Founding Fathers Forgotten?

Mr. Kufuor’s remarks appear to highlight growing discontent among party elders, who feel increasingly alienated from the party’s current direction. He warned that disregarding the voices of founding figures and experienced leaders threatens the very foundation of the NPP.

“It’s not just about me. It’s about the principle. When founding fathers are ignored, the party risks losing its soul,” he remarked.

Tensions Rise Ahead of 2028 Elections

The former president’s concerns come amid rising internal tensions within the NPP as it prepares for the 2028 general elections. With multiple aspirants emerging in the race to lead the party into the next polls, factionalism and internal wrangling have become more pronounced.

Analysts believe that Kufuor’s exclusion reflects a deeper issue of intra-party cohesion and a possible rift between the old guard and newer elements within the NPP hierarchy.

Bryan Acheampong’s Visit

Flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong’s visit was seen as an attempt to mend fences and gain the former president’s blessing ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested primary. Acheampong has positioned himself as a unifying figure capable of bridging the generational and ideological gaps within the party.

While Kufuor welcomed Acheampong’s visit, his broader comments suggest that restoring unity and mutual respect within the NPP will require deliberate efforts beyond symbolic gestures.

The NPP leadership is yet to respond to the former president’s comments.
