📍 Accra, Ghana – April 14, 2025 — The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced that the government will inject $1 million into vegetable production under the Feed Ghana Project, directly supporting over 1,500 peasant farmers in Northern Ghana.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, the Minister highlighted the urgent need to empower grassroots farmers, many of whom are already engaged in tomato and vegetable cultivation but lack the capital to expand their operations.
“We are dealing with the peasant farmers because they are on the field and are registered. Some are already into tomato production. It’s just a matter of identifying them and providing the logistics they require,” he said.
MoU with Apex Bank Set for April 16
To formalise the initiative, Minister Opoku revealed that he will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, to facilitate the disbursement of the funds.
“In some cases, some of them do not have the financial muscles to be able to do the kind of work they are doing. So I will sign an MoU for the distribution of $1 million to over 1,500 peasant farmers. This is just the beginning,” he stated.
Technical Support and Improved Seeds
In addition to financial aid, the government is also providing technical support to ensure higher crop yields. Mr. Opoku said farmers are being supplied with improved seeds and farming inputs, enabling year-round cultivation and productivity improvements.
“Our technical team has come up with the best quality, and we are supplying that to our farmers. I’ve been to the field, and I can tell you we have the technical know-how to surpass what Burkina Faso is doing,” he asserted.
The Feed Ghana Project is one of the key pillars of the broader Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency, reducing imports, and increasing farmer incomes through sustainable agricultural development.
