This move follows escalating tensions in the area after a violent confrontation between youth and police officers that led to a tragic loss of life.
Violent Confrontation Claims One Life
💥 The violence unfolded on Wednesday, April 9, when Fuseini Iddrisu, a young man, tragically lost his life during clashes between police and youth. Five others, including a police officer and an immigration officer, were wounded by gunshots and are receiving medical treatment.
Restoring Calm Through Joint Operations
👮 Calm was temporarily restored on April 9, thanks to a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces. However, tensions flared up once again on Thursday, April 10, when youth attacked the residence of Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku.
Arson and Property Damage
🔥 The attack on Ayariga’s home began with youth pelting stones, breaking windows and damaging parts of the building. The situation then escalated into a full-blown arson attack the following morning.
Outrage Over Police Actions
⚠️ The unrest is believed to have been triggered by outrage over the police’s involvement in the death of a young man, fueling anger among the community.
IGP’s Response and Assurances
📝 In a statement released on April 10, the Ghana Police Service revealed that during his visit to Bawku, IGP Yohuno will:
- Commiserate with the deceased’s family
- Visit the injured persons currently receiving treatment
- Reach out to officers who lost property in the violence
