GJA Commends Police for Arrest of Key Suspect in Ahmed Suale’s Murder Case

Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025 – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lauded the Ghana Police Service for making a significant breakthrough in the murder case of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, following the arrest and prosecution of a key suspect.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. The court has since remanded him into police custody, with a scheduled reappearance on April 1, 2025.

Significant Progress in Long-Standing Case

In a statement signed by its General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, the GJA described the arrest as a major milestone in the fight for justice for the late journalist, who was assassinated on January 16, 2019.

The association commended Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for what it termed a “giant step” in the pursuit of justice.

“For more than six years since the assassination of Ahmed Suale, this is the first time the Police have made a significant impact in respect of bringing the suspected killers of the investigative journalist to face justice,” the statement read.

GJA Urges Further Action

While welcoming the arrest, the GJA called on law enforcement authorities to ensure that all other accomplices involved in the crime are also brought to justice.

“We hope this major breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale,” the association added.

International Pressure and Legal Actions

The GJA has vowed to closely monitor the case and has indicated that if no concrete results are achieved by the end of March 2025, it will escalate the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

Additionally, the GJA has informed its international partners—the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)—about the arrest. Both organizations have pledged their support and readiness to escalate the case to global platforms to ensure justice is served.

Background

Ahmed Suale was an investigative journalist and a member of Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI team. He was assassinated in Madina, Accra, after his identity was exposed in a televised interview following a documentary that uncovered corruption in Ghanaian football.

The GJA also plans to meet with the police leadership to discuss updates on the case and other unresolved attacks on journalists, including the assault on Joy FM’s Latif Iddrisu.

As the case unfolds, local and international media watchdogs continue to demand accountability and justice for journalists facing threats and violence in Ghana.
