
Accra, March 24, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has appointed key officials to lead the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), naming a new Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and a Chief of Staff, with the changes taking effect immediately.
The appointments, made on the recommendation of the Armed Forces Council, mark the beginning of a new leadership era in Ghana’s military, ensuring continuity, efficiency, and national security preparedness.
New Military Leadership Appointments
✅ Major General William Agyapong – Chief of Defence Staff
✅ Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Chief of Army Staff
✅ Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing – Chief of Naval Staff
✅ Air Vice Marshal Eric Agyen-Frempong – Chief of Air Staff
✅ Air Vice Marshal Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai – Chief of Staff

In an official statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, and Presidential Spokesperson, President Mahama commended the outgoing military leadership and expressed confidence in the new officers.
“I urge the new leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to serve with patriotism, unity, and courage in defending Ghana’s sovereignty and ensuring our national security,” the President stated.

This latest shake-up in the military command structure is expected to bolster national defense operations, counter emerging security threats, and enhance military preparedness.
