DSTV Subscription Fees in Ghana May Drop Soon as Minister Pushes for Price Cuts

Ghanaian DSTV subscribers could soon enjoy reduced subscription fees, following a firm intervention by Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George. The Minister has announced plans to hold a crucial meeting with both the Ghanaian and South African teams of DSTV over what he describes as unfair pricing structures.

Mr. George insists that DSTV’s subscription rates must reflect Ghana’s current economic realities, stressing that the government will not back down in its efforts to secure relief for consumers.

“We will use the power of the state to protect the citizens of the state. I am clear in my mind that the meeting will not come to an end without an agreed reduction in the price,” he declared at a press briefing on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

Rejection of Promotional Alternatives

The Minister also rejected DSTV’s proposed alternative of upgrading customers to higher packages as a form of compensation. He emphasized that Ghanaians want actual price reductions, not promotional upgrades.

“I have seen the attempt by the South African management to say that when you buy a package, they should upgrade you to the next one. We are grateful, but that is not what we want. We want a price reduction,” he stated.

Broader Push for Digital Pricing Fairness

This development is part of the government’s wider campaign to regulate digital service pricing amid increasing public concerns about the rising cost of living and the high prices charged by foreign digital service providers operating in Ghana.

Many consumer groups and subscribers have welcomed the Minister’s bold stance, hoping it will lead to more affordable access to satellite TV services in the country.
