Accra, Ghana – April 7, 2025 – Security expert Professor Kwesi Aning has voiced serious concerns over the politicisation of an alleged drug trafficking and money laundering operation at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), warning that Ghana’s international reputation is at stake.
🔴 “It is disappointing and very disturbing,” said Prof. Aning, Director of Academic Affairs and Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday.
Allegations of Drug Trafficking & Money Laundering
The controversy erupted following revelations by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, who alleged on April 1 that two specific flights were involved in trafficking operations:
✈️ Cavok Air’s Antonov An-128B
✈️ AirMed’s N823AM
Rev. Fordjour claimed these aircraft were used to smuggle narcotics and launder money through KIA.
Prof. Aning’s Caution
⚠️ Avoid Damaging Ghana’s International Reputation
🔹 Ghana has long been identified as a key transit hub for drug trafficking, with approximately 15% of cocaine used in Europe passing through the country.
🔹 The allegations, if mishandled, could reignite global concerns about Ghana’s role in illicit drug trade.
🗣️ “We need to be careful not to create the impression within the international community that we are back to square one,” Prof. Aning cautioned.
⚠️ Non-Partisan Approach Needed
🔹 While lawmakers have the right to raise concerns, Prof. Aning urged a non-partisan, evidence-based investigation to safeguard national security and preserve Ghana’s global standing.
Next Steps & Government Response
💼 National Security and Aviation Authorities are expected to review the allegations and assess the credibility of the claims.
