Bawku MP Mahama Ayariga Condemns Killing of NHIA Director in Upper East Region

Bolgatanga, May 21, 2025 – The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the Bongo District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
Mr. Akugri was reportedly shot and killed, and his body set ablaze in Nangodi, a community near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, sending shockwaves across the region and sparking public outrage.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 20, Mr. Ayariga described the killing as “gruesome” and “dastardly”, and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He referred to the deceased as a “comrade”, highlighting the personal and communal loss.
Call for Justice and Calm
The Majority Leader urged law enforcement authorities to launch a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I urge all to remain calm and let’s focus on the ongoing efforts of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku situation,” Mr. Ayariga said in the statement.
He commended the youth of Bawku for their recent display of restraint, acknowledging their commitment to peace and reconciliation in a region long plagued by tensions.

Reaffirming Peace Efforts
Mr. Ayariga reiterated the importance of the ongoing peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing that “meaningful progress” is being made towards restoring lasting stability in the area.
“We must not allow any violent act to derail the peace process,” he warned, stressing the need for collective vigilance against attempts to inflame the situation.
The tragic death of Mr. Akugri has reignited concerns about security in Northern Ghana, and comes at a time when traditional and political leaders are working closely to restore calm in the Bawku area.
