UTAG-UG Demands Resignation of Auditor-General Over GH¢59.2m Audit Report

Accra, Ghana – May 20, 2025 — The University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the immediate resignation of the Auditor-General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, following what it describes as a “misleading and unethical” payroll audit report.

This demand stems from a recent special payroll verification audit conducted by the Auditor-General’s office, which alleged that the University of Ghana overstated its employee compensation by a staggering GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, May 20, UTAG-UG’s General Secretary, Jerry Joe Harrison, vehemently rejected the findings of the report, asserting that it misrepresents the reality and tarnishes the reputation of both the university and its staff.

“It appears to us that the Audit Service is more interested in appearing to be working than doing the right thing,” Harrison said. “The University of Ghana maintains that the audit report was not shared with them for comments or clarification of discrepancies before it was made public. This is unfair and unethical.”

Allegations of Breach of Ethical Standards

Harrison accused the Auditor-General of breaching core ethical standards of the auditing profession by failing to give the university a fair opportunity to respond to the findings before publication. He emphasized that such conduct undermines the credibility of the Auditor-General’s office and makes Mr. Asiedu unfit to continue in his role.

“For the Auditor-General to preside over an institution that disregards ethical standard practices, we are hereby calling for his resignation. If this call is ignored, we will petition the President to seek his removal from office,” he stated.

Threat of Escalation

UTAG-UG warned that it will not rest until the matter is addressed appropriately, stressing that unless corrective measures are taken to rectify the damage caused by the report, they will escalate the issue to the highest level of authority.

The GH¢59.2 million discrepancy reported by the Auditor-General has sparked concern among university stakeholders, prompting renewed scrutiny over the transparency and accuracy of public auditing processes in Ghana.

The Auditor-General’s office is yet to respond publicly to the demands and allegations made by UTAG-UG.
