Tottenham End 17-Year Trophy Drought with Europa League Triumph Over Manchester United

Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year wait for silverware with a narrow but historic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final, played in Bilbao. Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike proved enough to crown the North London side European champions, delivering their first major trophy since 2008.

The final, contested between two sides languishing in 16th and 17th place in the Premier League, was more about redemption than form. Despite a generally sluggish performance from both teams, the match came to life in the 43rd minute when Johnson capitalised on a costly mix-up between Luke Shaw and goalkeeper Andre Onana, bundling the ball across the line to give Spurs the lead.

In a tense and fragmented second half, Tottenham relied heavily on their defensive unit to preserve the advantage. A standout moment came when Dutch center-back Micky van de Ven produced a dramatic clearance to deny Rasmus Hojlund’s looping header from finding the back of the net.
Manchester United responded with attacking changes, including the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho, but failed to break down a resilient Spurs defence marshaled by Pedro Porro and his fellow backliners. The Red Devils’ late surge could not produce an equaliser, condemning them to a trophyless season and their lowest league finish in years.
The victory marked a significant milestone for Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou, who has now added European glory to the League Cup title won earlier in the season. Under pressure in his second campaign, Postecoglou silenced critics by guiding his team to success on the continental stage, extending his unbeaten run against Manchester United to six matches—five of them under his leadership.
The result also served as poetic justice for Tottenham, who suffered a League Cup final defeat to United in 2009. This time, the roles were reversed, and Spurs emerged victorious, bringing joy and pride to their long-suffering fans.
For Manchester United, the loss adds to an already disappointing campaign, ending without a trophy and outside of Champions League qualification. As the Red Devils prepare for a critical offseason, Tottenham celebrate a long-awaited return to football’s honours list.
