Accra High Court Jurors Declare Strike Over 8-Month Unpaid Allowances

ACCRA – June 2, 2025 — Jurors at the Accra High Court have declared a strike action effective today, Monday, June 2, following the government’s failure to pay their allowances for eight consecutive months.
The jurors say their decision comes after multiple unsuccessful attempts to get their concerns addressed. Despite reaching out to various judicial authorities, including the Judicial Secretary, Director of Finance, and the Acting Chief Justice, the issue remains unresolved.
In an interview with TV3’s News Central, one of the affected jurors, Justice Opoku, expressed deep frustration over the prolonged silence and inaction.
“We have exhausted all the avenues. We wrote to the Judicial Secretary, we talked to them, it did not materialize. We spoke to the Director for Finance, it didn’t work, then later we went to the office of the Acting CJ,” Opoku said.
“Since the money is not coming forth, we have no other option than to strike. From last year October to date—that is eight months. The truth of the matter is that none of our members is getting more than 2,500 Ghana cedis a month.”
Implications of the Strike
The strike is expected to have immediate repercussions on court proceedings, especially criminal trials that rely on jury panels, potentially delaying justice delivery.
Legal analysts have expressed concern over the impact on ongoing and pending cases, urging the Judicial Service and the Ministry of Finance to address the matter urgently.
This development comes at a time when the judiciary is already under scrutiny for operational delays and backlog of cases, raising questions about administrative efficiency and funding for judicial support staff.
The Judicial Service is yet to issue an official response regarding the strike or any timeline for disbursing the unpaid allowances.
