Mahama: Goldbod Initiative Generates $2.7 Billion in Four Months, Reforms Ghana’s Gold Sector

ACCRA – June 2, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Goldbod initiative, introduced as part of his administration’s gold sector reforms, has already yielded $2.7 billion in export revenue between January and April 2025.
Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, President Mahama said the revenue was accrued through gold exports managed jointly by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and the Goldbod.
“The Goldbod, a key plank in my administration’s strategy to reform the gold mining sector and ensure maximum benefit for Ghanaians from our gold resources, has taken off. In its short existence, it has sanitised the gold sector, ensuring maximum returns from our gold export,” Mahama stated.
He added that the $2.7 billion is expected to rise significantly by year-end, reflecting the initiative’s growing impact and improved export systems.
Enhancing Transparency and Revenue in Mining
The Goldbod initiative is part of a broader effort to restructure Ghana’s gold mining industry, tackle illegal mining (galamsey), improve transparency in gold trade, and secure maximum revenue for the state.
According to President Mahama, the initiative has not only boosted financial returns, but also led to enhanced institutional oversight and regulatory coordination across the gold mining value chain.
The announcement comes amid global scrutiny over resource governance in Africa, and Ghana’s push to ensure that its natural resources benefit citizens more directly.
