Nhyiaeso MP Challenges Bawumia Camp’s Claims of Widespread Support in NPP

Accra, June 21, 2025 — Dr. Stephen Amoah, Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has cast doubt on the perceived dominance of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s support within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting that some endorsements may not be as genuine as portrayed.
His comments come after approximately 60 NPP MPs were seen visiting Dr. Bawumia’s office in Accra, pledging their support for his 2026 presidential bid.
“We all saw the video, but not everyone in it supports Dr. Bawumia. I can count about seven people who were there but are not genuinely behind him,” Dr. Amoah claimed on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show.
The Nhyiaeso legislator, who is a known supporter of Kennedy Agyapong, said the display of loyalty to Bawumia may have been exaggerated, warning against what he called “political theatrics.”
“Some MPs who were in that meeting actually have different preferences. People can always change their minds when they consider the bigger picture and what Ghanaians expect from us,” he added.
In a bold challenge to the integrity of the endorsements, Dr. Amoah vowed to resign if certain MPs he identified as secretly supporting other candidates vote for Bawumia and he wins their votes.
Though he declined to provide specific numbers, Dr. Amoah expressed confidence in Kennedy Agyapong’s support base, both within Parliament and among the grassroots.
NPP Primaries Approaching
The internal contest is expected to intensify in the coming months, with the NPP’s presidential primaries set for January 31, 2026. Early endorsements and declarations from both camps suggest a heated race between Dr. Bawumia, seen as the establishment’s favourite, and Kennedy Agyapong, who has cast himself as a populist reformer.
Party observers note that the internal dynamics of the NPP have grown increasingly complex, as regional loyalties, performance records, and grassroots sentiment continue to shape the evolving leadership battle.
