President Mahama Allocates GHS1 Billion to Revamp Ghana’s Security Agencies

Accra, June 21, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GHS1 billion budget to retool Ghana’s under-resourced security services, following a critical review of their operational challenges during a recent National Security Council meeting.

The announcement, made during a visit to the Ghana National Fire Service on Friday, June 20, marks one of the government’s most significant investments in internal security in recent years.

“I have managed to squeeze the hand of the Minister of Finance to his back, and we will get a budget of a billion cedis for retooling of your various services,” President Mahama declared.

Urgent Need for Fire Tenders

President Mahama expressed deep concern about the deplorable condition of fire service equipment, especially outdated fire tenders, some of which are over a decade old.

“The Fire Service needs equipment urgently… they get insulted by the public for late response, but the real issue is they don’t have the equipment,” he said.

He called on the public to show understanding as the government works to improve conditions, citing the difficult environment in which personnel operate.

Challenges Facing the Police

The President also highlighted the increased risks confronting the Ghana Police Service, especially in combating armed robbery and violent crime.

“You do not expect the police to confront armed robbers with light-skinned vehicles,” he stressed, noting the need for properly armoured and equipped patrol units.

The retooling will benefit all 11 agencies under the Ministry of the Interior, including the Ghana Immigration Service, Prisons Service, NADMO, Fire Service, NACOC, NIA, and others.

Interior Ministry Agencies Donate GHS1 Million to Mahama Cares Fund

In a show of solidarity and social responsibility, senior officers across the Interior Ministry’s 11 agencies have contributed GHS1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the Mahama Cares Fund.

The fund is aimed at supporting citizens living with chronic diseases and financial difficulties in accessing treatment.

Agencies involved in the donation include:

  • Ghana Police Service
  • Ghana Immigration Service
  • Ghana Prisons Service
  • Ghana National Fire Service
  • National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO)
  • Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC)
  • National Identification Authority (NIA)
  • Gaming Commission
  • National Peace Council
  • Ghana Refugee Board

President Mahama thanked the agencies for their generosity and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of both security personnel and the general public.
