Former MMDCEs Declare Unwavering Support for Dr. Bawumia’s 2028 Presidential Bid

Accra, June 24, 2025 — A powerful coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 has thrown its full weight behind Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, endorsing him as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The group, operating under the banner “Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia,” made the announcement at a press conference held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, June 23.
“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment,” the forum declared. “We are ready to commit time, resources, and political muscle to ensure Dr. Bawumia becomes the next flagbearer and eventually, President of Ghana.”
Experience and Party Loyalty at Play
With many members having served in the NPP’s internal leadership for over 16 years, the forum emphasised its deep understanding of party dynamics and electoral strategy.
“95% of us have served as Constituency and Regional Executives. We know the grassroots, and we know how to win elections,” they noted.
The group praised Dr. Bawumia for spearheading Ghana’s digital transformation, citing initiatives such as:
- The Ghana Card rollout
- Mobile Money Interoperability
- The Paperless Ports System
These, they said, are legacies of technocratic excellence and innovation that modernised key sectors of the economy and widened financial inclusion.
A Leader with National Appeal
The forum described Dr. Bawumia as “accessible, humble, and unifying”, crediting his ability to engage all factions within the NPP as crucial for party unity.
They asserted that Dr. Bawumia’s national recognition and track record from the 2024 campaign provide the NPP with a head start over other potential candidates, positioning him as the most electable figure ahead of the January 31, 2026 internal primaries.
“He is well-known, well-liked, and well-prepared. The data shows that beginning with a candidate like Dr. Bawumia gives the party a serious advantage.”
Mobilising for Victory
In their closing remarks, the former MMDCEs pledged to mobilise their grassroots networks across all 16 regions of Ghana to push Dr. Bawumia’s campaign to victory.
Their strategic roadmap includes:
- Door-to-door campaigns articulating his vision
- Countering misinformation with verified facts
- Fundraising and logistical support to strengthen the campaign machinery
“We’re not just endorsing—we’re activating,” they stated. “Dr. Bawumia is the continuity and innovation that Ghana needs.”
This bold endorsement signals a new wave of momentum for the former Vice President as the NPP prepares for a fiercely contested internal race that will determine its face for the 2028 national elections.
