OSP Must Be More Tolerant of Criticism – NDC’s Wonder Madilo Cautions Amid Public Spat

Accra, June 24, 2025 — Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wonder Madilo, has called on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to exercise greater tolerance and maturity in handling public criticism, warning that escalating feuds among state officials risk damaging the credibility of governance institutions.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, June 23, Madilo urged Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng to adopt a more restrained approach, particularly in responding to public commentary.

“Kissi Agyebeng must also be very accommodating with criticisms. We know that his investigation is doing very well… but he also must learn how to take criticisms in good faith or let them be—just let them be what they are,” Madilo advised.

His remarks come in the wake of a sharp exchange between the OSP and Prof. Ransford Gyampo, Acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, who questioned the motive behind the OSP’s investigation into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Prof. Gyampo, during a TV3 interview on June 21, remarked, “I hope the OSP is not motivated by vendetta but out of patriotism.” The OSP responded sternly on June 22, labeling the comment “unfounded” and warning that such public statements could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.

Madilo, however, described the OSP’s reaction as disproportionate, noting that the office has endured far greater criticism since its inception.

“He has received more criticisms than this, so I do not know why this has escalated. Even the family of Ken Ofori-Atta has done the same… What you are doing is giving [political opponents] ammunition,” he warned.

He further urged that “cool heads prevail”, and called on senior government leaders to step in and restore calm.

“It is very dangerous for government officials to be fighting among themselves. What you are doing is giving them ammunition.”

Background to the Rift

The OSP’s ongoing investigation into Ken Ofori-Atta involves several corruption-related allegations, including contracts involving Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML). According to the OSP, Prof. Gyampo intervened directly during a search operation of SML premises, which was carried out with support from National Security operatives.

The latest spat highlights the growing tensions between public officials and institutions, even as the country’s anti-corruption agencies strive to maintain independence and public trust.

Observers warn that the credibility of such institutions may suffer if personalities become central to public discourse, rather than the merits of legal and investigative processes.
