Otumfuo Urges Government to Complete KNUST Teaching Hospital Project

The Asantehene and Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has renewed calls for the government to prioritize the completion of the long-delayed KNUST Teaching Hospital, stressing its vital role in enhancing healthcare education and delivery in Ghana.

Addressing the final session of KNUST’s 58th Special Congregation on Saturday, June 28, 2025, Otumfuo expressed concern over the 18-year delay since he cut the sod for the project in July 2007, despite visible progress.

“I am passionate about this project because of the peculiar purpose it is meant to serve when finished, as it will complement the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the training of medical and allied health students of KNUST,” the Asantehene said.

The $125 million project, spanning 71 acres, is being executed by the College of Architecture and Planning of KNUST, with funding from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and KNUST. It is expected to house a cardiothoracic and neurosurgical centre, diagnostic unit, laboratory, morgue, OPD block, administration block, wards, laundry unit, and other essential facilities.

Otumfuo urged the Vice President, who was present at the event, to impress upon President Mahama to make the completion of the hospital a national priority to benefit students, faculty, and the healthcare system at large.

Support for Young Lecturers

The Asantehene also appealed to the University Council and administration to motivate and support young lecturers, acknowledging their dedication despite high workloads and better opportunities elsewhere.

“I am aware of the immense workload of high student-lecturer ratios regarding their routine research work, and yet, they remain and mostly continue to contribute to the development of Ghana,” he stated.

He called for better incentives, tools, and institutional support to enable lecturers to provide quality education and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s development.

Encouragement to Students

Otumfuo advised graduating students to remain humble, lifelong learners, and lead with kindness and integrity. “True scholarship is won not by arrogance, but by humility,” he noted.

Royal Visit from Eswatini

For the first time, the event was graced by King Mswati III of the Kingdom of Eswatini, who is on a four-day state visit to Ghana. Under Otumfuo’s leadership, the Mastercard Foundation has awarded five scholarships to students from Eswatini to pursue petroleum engineering at KNUST, bringing the total number of Eswatini students at the university to 18.

King Mswati III lauded KNUST for providing an environment that promotes critical thinking, innovation, and professional excellence. He reminded students that success is measured not just by titles, but by the impact they make in society.

“We are confident that our students here are exposed to excellent learning experiences and acquiring the best education,” he added.
