Ghana Explores Aviation Partnership with Portugal for National Airline Revival

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed Ghana’s interest in partnering with Portugal to revive a national airline, as part of broader efforts to boost the country’s aviation sector and overall economy.

The President made this known on Thursday, July 10, 2025, during a diplomatic ceremony at the Jubilee House, where he received letters of credence from five newly accredited ambassadors to Ghana. Among them was Maria Da Conceição de Sousa Pilar, the new Portuguese ambassador, alongside envoys from Seychelles, Venezuela, Chad, and Gabon.

In his discussion with the Portuguese envoy, President Mahama highlighted the strategic value of enhanced Ghana-Portugal cooperation, particularly in the aviation industry.

“We appreciate the fact that the Portuguese national airline flies directly to Accra,” President Mahama said. “Ghana itself is trying to reestablish its national airline. At the appropriate time, we will be looking for partners, and if the Portuguese national airline is interested, we could do a partnership.”

He underscored that the government remains focused on strengthening bilateral ties not only in aviation but also in trade and investment.

“We want to expand economic relations, and we believe that we can attract more investors to come and invest in Ghana. Ghana has a lot of natural resources, with a market size of almost 35 million people,” President Mahama noted.

The potential partnership comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to reassert itself in the regional aviation market, following the collapse of previous national carriers. The President’s remarks signal a renewed push to attract foreign expertise and investment into the country’s aviation sector, while fostering diplomatic and economic collaboration with Portugal.
