NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie Confirms Participation in July 11 Parliamentary Rerun

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, has officially confirmed her participation in the parliamentary rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.
Her decision marks a significant shift from the NPP’s earlier stance, which rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) order for a rerun. The EC mandated the fresh vote following disputes over the validity of results from 19 polling stations during the December 7, 2024, general election.
Speaking to the press at her Odorkor office in Accra on Thursday, July 10, Owusu Afriyie expressed unwavering confidence ahead of the rerun and reiterated her determination to emerge victorious.
“I am contesting. We are fully prepared. We are going for this contest tomorrow. First, I want to thank the Almighty God for protecting us throughout these seven months. We went for elections on December 7, and I won that election,” she stated.
Her remarks come just a day after the Accra High Court dismissed her application to stop the rerun. In his ruling, Justice Ali Baba Abature described the motion as “unmeritorious,” affirming that halting the process would obstruct the EC’s constitutional duty and deny constituents their right to representation.
Although the NPP initially argued that the EC’s decision violated a binding High Court order from January 4, 2025—which directed the collation and declaration of results from 62 polling stations—Owusu Afriyie has now opted to proceed with the rerun, appearing to break from the party’s official position.
The NPP’s legal team had insisted that as of January 27, 2025, only three polling stations remained uncollated according to the EC’s own public updates.
Nonetheless, the Electoral Commission has stood by its decision to rerun the election in the 19 affected polling stations, setting the stage for a closely watched and potentially tense contest on Friday.
