UK-Ghana Trade Hits £1.5 Billion as Outgoing High Commissioner Harriet Thompson Bids Farewell

The United Kingdom’s outgoing High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, has announced that bilateral trade between the UK and Ghana has reached £1.5 billion, signaling a significant milestone in economic relations between the two countries.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, July 16, Ms. Thompson highlighted the UK’s commitment to deepening its economic partnership with Ghana, despite recent global economic challenges.

Trade Resilience Amid Global Turbulence

“Even after the difficult economic issues we have all seen around the world since the pandemic, the UK-Ghana trade partnership has grown,” she remarked, emphasizing that the partnership has been resilient in the face of global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She stated that the current trade value—£1.5 billion—reflects an upward trajectory, with the majority of trade made up of Ghanaian exports to the UK, particularly gold and oil.

Expanding Trade Beyond Gold and Oil

While gold and oil remain Ghana’s dominant exports, Ms. Thompson pointed out that other sectors such as agriculture are beginning to make significant contributions to the trade relationship.

“Over half of that is Ghanaian exports to the UK. Admittedly, a lot of that is from gold and oil, but other sectors are growing too, including agriculture and other things,” she explained.

Diplomatic Legacy

Harriet Thompson, who is wrapping up her diplomatic mission in Ghana, played a pivotal role in strengthening UK-Ghana collaborations across trade, climate action, and security. Her tenure saw enhanced cooperation and support for Ghana in key development areas.

Her remarks underscore the UK’s strategic interest in maintaining a strong economic and diplomatic relationship with Ghana as both nations explore broader partnerships beyond traditional commodities.
