Mahama to host Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on August 5

Former President John Dramani Mahama is set to convene a landmark Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in Accra on August 5, 2025, with the goal of reshaping global health governance and advancing Africa-led health reforms.

The summit, themed “African Health Sovereignty in a Reimagined Global Health Governance Architecture,” will gather African Heads of State, international health leaders, and development partners to endorse a new vision for the continent’s health independence.

In a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, it was revealed that the summit will serve as the official launch of The Accra Initiative, a bold framework aimed at aligning global health governance with Africa’s priorities.

Key expected outcomes include:

  • Formation of a Presidential High-Level Panel tasked with developing a roadmap for global health governance reform.
  • Launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative, which will support investment-driven, country-led health systems, backed by domestic resources and targeted global partnerships.
  • Adoption of the Accra Compact, a declaration outlining a shared African vision for health sovereignty and a more equitable global health order.

President Mahama, who has championed continental health reforms in recent years, stressed the urgency of overhauling global health systems that he described as outdated and unreflective of Africa’s demographic and economic growth.

“Africa must take charge of its health destiny—not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action… reshaping the rules that govern global health—rules that must reflect the voices and realities of our people,” Mahama declared.

The summit is expected to be a defining moment in Africa’s push for health equity, with leaders and partners poised to commit to sustainable, African-owned solutions to persistent health challenges.
