The Ghana Police Service has dismissed media reports alleging that officers raided the residence of Ibrahim Baba Bukari, the Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), leading to the death of a person.
In a statement issued over the weekend, the police described the reports as false, stating emphatically that no such raid occurred.
According to the police, the Bono East Regional Command had responded to intelligence about a robbery attempt in the early hours of Friday, August 1, 2025, around 1:20 am.
During the operation, Seidu Bukari, the brother of Baba Bukari, was shot while attempting to escape arrest. He was later confirmed dead at the hospital.
The police identified the deceased as a known member of a robbery syndicate operating in Techiman and surrounding areas, mainly stealing motorbikes for resale in Kumasi. He was also reportedly wanted in connection with an earlier robbery case.
“Officers retrieved a motorbike and other tools believed to have been used in the attempted crime. A manhunt has since been launched for the other suspects who fled the scene,” the statement said.
To ensure transparency and accountability, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched a special team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to investigate the incident thoroughly.
The police called on the public and media to be circumspect in reporting and avoid spreading misinformation, especially in matters with security implications.
