Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin Demands Dismissal of Hanna Bissiw and Malik Basintale Over “Violence-Endorsing” Comments

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called on President John Mahama to immediately dismiss Dr. Hanna Bissiw, Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, and Malik Basintale, CEO of the National Employment Agency, over what he described as “inflammatory and violence-endorsing statements.”
In a strongly-worded press release issued on behalf of the Minority caucus, Afenyo-Markin accused the two National Democratic Congress (NDC) national executives of making statements that pose a direct threat to Ghana’s democratic stability.
“President Mahama must immediately dismiss Hanna Bissiw and Malik Basintale as public officials for their inflammatory and violence-endorsement statements,” the statement read.
Holding the Presidency Accountable
Afenyo-Markin squarely placed responsibility on President Mahama for what he described as growing political tension, acts of intimidation, and the deterioration of democratic discourse, especially in the aftermath of the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
“President Mahama, the choice is yours. History will judge you by the decision you make in the next 48 hours. Choose wisely, for the future of Ghana’s democracy depends on it,” he declared.
The Minority Leader vowed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would not sit idle while democracy is allegedly undermined by political violence and incendiary rhetoric.
“We will not rest until Ghana’s democracy is secured from those who would destroy it through violence and intimidation,” he said.
Context: Violence in Ablekuma North Rerun
The demands come in the wake of alleged assaults and chaos during the July 11 rerun in parts of Ablekuma North, where key NPP figures—including former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, Deputy National Organiser Chris Asamoah, and several journalists—were reportedly physically attacked by individuals alleged to be aligned with the NDC.
Both Dr. Hanna Bissiw, the NDC’s National Women’s Organiser, and Malik Basintale, Deputy Communications Officer of the party, have been criticised for making remarks deemed provocative by the NPP. While the NDC insists their officials were merely responding to provocation, the NPP argues their statements amount to incitement and have escalated tensions.
Growing National Attention
The controversy is intensifying calls for restraint, accountability, and political maturity on all sides. With the 2028 general elections on the horizon, many fear that unchecked rhetoric and political violence could erode Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains.
It remains to be seen how President Mahama will respond to the demands from the Minority, but pressure is clearly mounting for swift action.
