The children of the late National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong, were overcome with emotion as they paid a heartfelt tribute to their father during the interdenominational state funeral held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square.
Sarpong, who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash in Sikaman, Adansi Akrofrom District, Ashanti Region, left behind five children — four boys and one girl. The crash claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed; and three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

In their tribute, the children described their father as more than just a parent — a hero, role model, anchor, friend, and greatest teacher. They praised his life of purpose, dignity, and unwavering commitment to service, both to his family and to Ghana. They recalled his calm composure, punctuality, and deep respect for public service as a calling rather than a job.
At home, they said, he was gentle, wise, and warm — a man whose laughter brightened their days and whose counsel guided them through life. They shared their disbelief and pain at his sudden passing, saying the shock “pierced through the veins and bones” of the family. Despite the grief, they vowed to carry forward his legacy, his dreams, and his values.
They expressed regret that they never got the chance to fulfil their plan to have him step back from work, enjoy his retirement, and reflect on his youthful days while they cared for him. “Yet, Daddy, you are running away into eternity,” they lamented.
Ending their tribute, they hailed his life as one marked by honour and pride, saying he had “paid his dues” and left behind an enviable standard for the Sarpong family to follow. With heavy hearts, they bid him farewell, saying: “Daddy, rest well. Nanti yie. Damirefa due.”
