Ghana will today hold a state funeral at the Black Star Square in Accra for the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in Sikaman-Brofroyedru, Adansi Akrofrom District, Ashanti Region.
President John Dramani Mahama, government officials, security service members, traditional leaders, and bereaved families are expected to attend the ceremony, which will feature an interdenominational service.
Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah will be buried at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo.
The other two victims, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, were laid to rest on August 10 in accordance with Islamic rites.
The eight officials died while on official duty when their Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crashed, prompting renewed calls for urgent investment in the country’s military aviation fleet.
Security has been tightened in the capital for today’s event, with portions of major roads closed to traffic to allow the funeral procession to proceed smoothly.
