Widow of Squadron Leader Anala Delivers Heartfelt Tribute at State Funeral

Ursula Wematu Asaghedewe, widow of Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, gave a deeply emotional tribute to her late husband during the interdenominational state funeral held on Friday, August 15, in honour of the eight distinguished individuals who lost their lives in the Sikaman helicopter crash.

Squadron Leader Anala was among those who perished on August 6 when a military helicopter crashed in a forested area in Sikaman, Adansi Akrofrom District, Ashanti Region. The delegation was travelling to Obuasi for the launch of the government’s Cooperative Mining Initiative when the tragedy occurred. He was one of three crew members on board, alongside Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The crash also claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy NADMO Director-General Samuel Aboagye.

In her tribute, Ursula described her husband as her “answered prayer” — a hardworking, selfless man who dedicated his life to his family, friends, and country. She recalled his promise to never let her “lift a finger,” a vow he kept with unwavering commitment. She painted a portrait of a man who would go hungry just to ensure the comfort of his loved ones.

With heartbreaking detail, she spoke of the joy he felt at the recent birth of their daughter, Wenlie Wesoamo Anala, and the short but precious time they spent together as a family. She recounted how he had planned to return in October for Wenlie’s christening, a promise now left unfulfilled.

Her grief was palpable as she questioned how she would explain his absence to their daughter in the years to come, and how she would shoulder the responsibility of giving her the life they had planned together. She expressed her longing for his daily video messages, recalling that his last words to her were, “My love, I will call you back when we are back in Accra. Love youuuu.”

Ursula concluded her tribute with a final farewell — torn between sorrow and hope — saying she would forever cherish their moments together and look forward to a “glorious reunion” one day.
