Mahama Promotes 24-Hour Economy, Unveils Volta Economic Corridor at Africa–Singapore Forum

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to host international investments, assuring global business leaders that the country is open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Speaking at the 8th Africa–Singapore Business Forum on Tuesday, 26 August, Mr. Mahama said Ghana’s new economic direction is anchored on productivity, exports, and job creation.
“Our economic strategy is anchored in productivity, exports, and jobs. We call it the 24-hour economy for a reason. Ghana is open for business 24 hours a day,” he stated.
Infrastructure and Incentives for Investors
The former president explained that government is rolling out infrastructure, incentives, and skills development programmes to support businesses willing to run round-the-clock operations in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, sports, and services.
The Volta Economic Corridor
A central pillar of this strategy is the Volta Economic Corridor, described by Mr. Mahama as Ghana’s most ambitious development plan to date. It is anchored on four key pillars:
- Irrigation of more than two million hectares for year-round agriculture.
- Establishment of agro-industrial parks for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
- Promotion of tourism and hospitality along Lake Volta.
- Transformation of Lake Volta into a transport hub, reducing logistics costs and linking factories to markets.
Supporting Projects
Mr. Mahama highlighted ongoing initiatives that will complement the corridor, including:
- Legon Pharmaceutical Innovation Park
- Kumasi Machinery and Technology Park
- Akosombo and Juapong Garments and Textiles Park
- Digital TVET Centres of Excellence
- Renewable Corridors
He emphasised that these projects are designed to accelerate industrialisation, enhance skills, and create sustainable jobs, while positioning Ghana as a competitive business destination in Africa.
