Police Assure Akwatia Residents: 5,500 Officers Deployed for By-Election Security, Not Intimidation

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed suggestions that the deployment of 5,500 officers for the upcoming Akwatia by-election is meant to intimidate voters.
Addressing the media after a police show of force in Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, the Director of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Akrofi, stressed that the measure is purely to ensure safety and order.
She explained that the deployment will cover all 119 polling stations across the 21 electoral areas in the constituency, which have been divided into nine zones to guarantee maximum security before, during, and after the polls.
“The heavy deployment is not to scare voters but to assure them that they can cast their ballots and go about their activities in peace,” ACP Akrofi noted.
She further clarified that the multiple police checkpoints set up along roads in the constituency are part of wider security arrangements designed to regulate movement, control access, and conduct necessary routine checks.
The Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting both voters and residents throughout the electoral process, assuring that every measure taken is geared towards maintaining law and order.
