One arrested after chaos at NDC office in Akwatia during by-election

Tensions escalated at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party office in Akwatia on Tuesday after a disturbance led to the arrest of one individual, who was subsequently placed in a police Black Maria — a van designated for transporting detainees.

The chaos reportedly erupted when some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters were accused of tearing down posters belonging to the NDC candidate at a polling station, sparking a confrontation.

Swift intervention by police helped restore order, ensuring that voting continued without major disruptions. Security personnel at the scene warned that any further acts of violence or attempts to interfere with the electoral process would be met with firm legal consequences.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, necessitating the election of a new representative.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured all stakeholders — including political parties, candidates, and voters — of a transparent and credible election process. In line with this, over 5,500 police officers have been deployed across the Akwatia Constituency to maintain law and order.

Representing the two main political parties in the race are Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP. The by-election has become a key battleground, drawing in national party executives and supporters in recent weeks as both sides intensify efforts to secure victory.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots by the close of polls in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests on the political calendar.

Residents have been urged to exercise their voting rights peacefully and adhere to electoral guidelines.
