Voting Underway in Akwatia By-Election Amid Tight NDC–NPP Contest

Voting is ongoing in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, where residents are casting their ballots to elect a new Member of Parliament following the passing of the late MP, Ernest Kumi.
More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to take part in the by-election, which has evolved into a fierce political showdown between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC has presented Bernard Bediako Baidoo as its candidate, while the NPP is being represented by Solomon Kwame Asumadu. Both contenders have mounted vigorous campaigns in recent weeks, with top party leaders and national executives storming the constituency to galvanise support.
To ensure order, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,500 officers across Akwatia, strategically positioned at polling centres and potential flashpoints. The police have cautioned against electoral violence, voter intimidation, and breaches of regulations, warning that offenders will be dealt with swiftly.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has also assured stakeholders of a credible and transparent process, outlining measures to guarantee timely delivery of election materials, effective monitoring, and smooth collation of results.
The by-election has attracted national attention as a significant test of political strength between the NDC and NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Political analysts suggest that the outcome could provide early indications of voter sentiment and momentum as the two dominant parties gear up for the national contest.
