Government to build 50,000-capacity stadium at Borteyman Sports Complex

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced plans for a 50,000-capacity stadium at the Borteyman Sports Complex as part of government’s long-term vision to transform the area into a modern sports city.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Adams acknowledged the infrastructural challenges facing Ghana’s sports sector but reaffirmed government’s commitment to upgrading facilities to international standards.

“We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex. Because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village so that international clubs can come and camp and train there,” he explained.

He disclosed that the project will also include accommodation facilities to reduce reliance on the national budget for housing national teams such as the Black Stars. The development, he noted, will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

“With such a facility, we will also add accommodation. When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars on the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement,” he said.

According to the Minister, the government is targeting a minimum seating capacity of 50,000, with completion expected before 2028.

The project forms part of a broader strategy to position Ghana as a sports hub in Africa, attract international teams for training camps, and promote sports tourism.
