The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major fire that gutted parts of the Accra Timber Market near Ayalolo School in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, 2025.
According to GNFS, the emergency call was received at 1:17 a.m., with the first team of firefighters arriving at 1:21 a.m. Seven fire engines from stations across the capital — including Accra City, Accra Regional Headquarters Substation, Ministries, Circle, National Headquarters, Abelemkpe, and Legon — were swiftly deployed to the scene.

They were supported by one GNFS water tanker and two additional tankers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Ablekuma Municipal Assembly.
The inferno, which engulfed several shops dealing in wooden planks and hardware materials, was eventually confined at 6:26 a.m., brought under control at 6:37 a.m., and completely extinguished by 11:44 a.m.

Two firefighters sustained injuries in the operation — one suffered an electric shock while the other sustained burns to the left arm. Both have since been treated and discharged, with officials confirming they are responding well to treatment.
Thanks to the swift response, adjoining structures, including the Ayalolo cluster of schools, were successfully shielded from the flames.
The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, visited the scene with senior officers including Deputy Director of Operations, ACFO II Osmond Anum, and Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, to assess the damage and support the firefighting teams.
The GNFS expressed gratitude to partner agencies for their assistance in tackling the blaze. Investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
