Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has announced a new government strategy to curb illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, by stationing the military permanently in affected areas.
Speaking on Citi TV, the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese MP said the initiative will cover all 44 galamsey-prone locations nationwide.
“In the past, security forces would conduct operations and then withdraw, allowing illegal miners to return. This time, there will be a permanent military presence,” he explained.
He added that the move is also aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s water bodies, stressing that “all the rivers we have will have permanent military presence.”
The announcement comes at a time of growing public concern over the destruction of natural resources and criticism of President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to declare a state of emergency on the galamsey menace.
