Lands Minister Assures Swift Resolution of Asanko Gold–Community Conflict

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to swiftly resolving the ongoing conflict between Asanko Gold Ghana Limited and the surrounding local communities.

The assurance was given during a working visit to the company’s site on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, following recent tensions that resulted in the destruction of company property and equipment valued at over US$33 million, as well as the death of a local resident on September 9.

The unrest stemmed from a confrontation between military personnel and community members on the company’s concession. Residents had expressed frustration over unmet development expectations, which they said pushed them to encroach on the mining concession.

Addressing Asanko Gold’s leadership, Minister Buah stressed the urgent need for peaceful coexistence between the company and host communities.
“As a government, we are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated. Dialogue and mutual understanding must prevail,” he stated.

The Minister urged the company to strictly adhere to mining regulations while prioritizing community engagement and development as part of their operations.

As part of his visit, he also paid respects to the family of the deceased, who was the Assembly Member for the area, and assured them of a thorough and transparent investigation.

He was accompanied by a delegation including the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Isaac Tandoh; Advisor to the Minister, Prof. J.S.Y. Kuma; Chief Inspector of Mines, Mr. Kofi Adjei; Director of Communications of the Ministry, Ms. Mawusi Mawuenyefia; National Coordinator of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), Ing. Frank Asare; and other ministry officials.
