Fresh Transfer Ban Hits Hearts of Oak Over Unpaid Player Compensation

Accra Hearts of Oak is facing a fresh transfer ban from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after failing to meet a crucial deadline to settle an outstanding debt owed to former player Francis Adjetey.
The GFA’s latest sanction, imposed after Hearts of Oak missed the July 7, 2025 deadline, bars the club from registering new players both domestically and internationally. The ruling follows a directive by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), ordering the club to pay GHS 106,477.42 in addition to interest and legal costs to Adjetey.
Previous Ban Lifted, But Fresh Trouble Looms
This fresh setback comes shortly after Hearts of Oak cleared a separate transfer ban by settling a $38,000 debt to New Edubiase United FC over the transfer of midfielder Salim Adams. Initially, the club was required to pay $70,000 for the player’s move and a share of an onward transfer fee. Despite missing multiple deadlines, they eventually negotiated a reduced payment to lift that ban.
However, this relief was short-lived, as Hearts of Oak’s failure to comply with the CAS ruling regarding Francis Adjetey has now triggered another embargo.
Failed Payment Negotiations
Sources indicate that the club attempted to negotiate a payment plan, proposing to settle the amount in three instalments, with the first payment scheduled for July 11, 2025. However, Adjetey rejected the offer, demanding full payment before agreeing to lift the transfer ban.
The club’s Managing Director, Delali Anku Adiamah, has been in talks with Adjetey to resolve the dispute. Yet, as of July 9, no agreement had been reached, leaving the ban in place.
Mounting Financial and Regulatory Concerns
This cycle of disputes and sanctions has exposed significant weaknesses in Hearts of Oak’s financial management and adherence to regulatory rulings. The club’s inability to settle debts on time is now threatening its preparations for the upcoming season, as the transfer ban blocks them from signing new players.
The GFA has clarified that the ban will remain until the full payment, including accrued costs, is made to Adjetey.
