EC Extends Nominations for Tamale Central By-Election by 10 Days

The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the nomination period for the Tamale Central by-election by 10 days following the withdrawal of two candidates, leaving the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Prof. Seidu Alidu as the sole contestant.

The withdrawal occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, after the close of nominations. In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, the EC explained that the extension is in line with Article 50(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that if only one candidate remains nominated before election day, a further 10-day period must be allowed for additional nominations.

“In line with Article 50(2) of the 1992 Constitution, the Commission will re-open nominations for ten (10) days,” the statement noted.

Nominations will now be received at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission between September 12 and September 21, 2025, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) within the stated period. Completed forms must be submitted in quadruplicate to the Returning Officer at the EC’s Tamale office, either personally or through a proposer or seconder.

Each nomination form must:

  • Be endorsed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by 18 other voters in the constituency.
  • Be signed with the candidate’s consent.
  • Include two recent postcard-sized photographs (bust, red background, full face and ears visible).

The filing fee is GH¢10,000 per candidate, while female aspirants and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) will pay GH¢7,500.

The withdrawal of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidates triggered the extension. Both officially notified the EC through their general secretaries after earlier completing their filings on September 10.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) had already announced that it would not contest the seat, citing solidarity with the NDC following the tragic death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
