Doris Adu Gyamfi has travelled from Ghana to New York to seek justice after her 15-year-old son, Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, was fatally shot in the Bronx.
Speaking after arriving ahead of his funeral, Ms Adu Gyamfi said her main priority was to ensure those responsible were identified and prosecuted.
“I want justice for my son, that is all,” she said.
Javits was shot on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while walking to school in the Claremont neighbourhood of the Bronx. His death has caused grief and concern among Ghanaian communities in New York.
The teenager was reportedly attacked shortly before 9:30 a.m. near Crotona Park as he made his way to DreamYard Preparatory School, where he was a Grade 10 student.
Information released by the New York Police Department said Javits suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to St Barnabas Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Police said three people wearing hooded clothing and surgical masks were in the area before the teenager arrived. Investigators indicated that Javits tried to run when the suspects approached him, but they chased him and opened fire.
The suspects are also believed to have returned to collect their spent shell casings before fleeing through a nearby subway station.
Investigators are following their movements and examining leads in an effort to establish their identities and whereabouts. Police continue to work to apprehend those responsible for the killing.
Ms Adu Gyamfi said her son had hoped to become a medical doctor, describing his death as the loss of a young boy whose promising future had been abruptly ended.
The teenager’s father had previously said Javits experienced bullying at school. Some of his classmates had been suspended in connection with the bullying before his son was killed.
