Accra, Ghana – February 11, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has relieved Dr. Alexander Adusei of his duties as Director of the Keta Port, citing the stalled progress of the project since its announcement.
A Project in Limbo
Dr. Adusei, appointed in 2019 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, was tasked with overseeing the port’s development in the Volta Region. However, no significant construction has taken place since the 2018 designation of Keta as an official port site under an Executive Instrument.
Despite interest from six private investors in August 2024, no firm agreements have been finalized, further delaying the project.
Political Pressure and Public Frustration
During the 2024 election campaign, Mahama criticized the previous administration for failing to deliver on the project, stating that after eight years, not even a single structure had been built.
Residents and stakeholders in the Volta Region have also voiced their frustration over the lack of progress.
Next Steps
While the official reason for Dr. Adusei’s dismissal has not been disclosed, sources suggest that the lack of tangible results influenced the decision. The government is expected to appoint new leadership and accelerate development efforts to fulfill its promise of making Keta Port a reality.
