OSP Declares Ken Ofori-Atta a Wanted Suspect in Corruption Cases

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations and has demanded his immediate return to Ghana to face questioning.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated that Ofori-Atta is now a wanted person, warning that if he fails to return voluntarily, legal steps will be taken to compel his repatriation.

Key Corruption Investigations

The OSP’s investigations center on the following cases:

1. Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML) and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) contract – related to revenue assurance in the petroleum and minerals sectors.

2. Termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Technology (BXC) for a network improvement project.

3. Procurement, contractor selection, and payments linked to the National Cathedral project.

4. Payments related to a contract for the purchase and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

5. Alleged irregular use of the GRA’s tax refund account.

OSP Denies Raid on Ofori-Atta’s Home

In response to reports of a raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence in Cantonments on February 11, Agyebeng categorically denied any involvement, describing the alleged incident as a staged event aimed at discrediting the OSP’s investigation.

> “Our intelligence points to the fact that the alleged raid was either staged or an imposter action to derail the investigation.”

Ofori-Atta’s Absence and Legal Implications

The former Finance Minister left Ghana on January 2, 2025, and on January 24, the OSP formally notified him that he was under investigation. He was scheduled to appear for questioning on February 10, 2025, but his lawyers informed the OSP that he was out of the country indefinitely for medical reasons.

Agyebeng, however, dismissed this claim, insisting that Ofori-Atta must return immediately to cooperate with the investigation.

With this latest development, the OSP has intensified its anti-corruption efforts, signaling a tougher stance on financial misconduct among public officials.
