Deadly Clash Erupts Between Hunters and Farmers in Zabzugu District

Kumtumbiliyili, Northern Region – February 21, 2025
A violent clash between hunters and farmers in Kumtumbiliyili, a community in the Zabzugu District of the Northern Region, has resulted in two fatalities and several injuries.
Cause of the Clash
Eyewitnesses report that a group of hunters invaded the area for a hunting expedition. During the hunt, they allegedly set fire to the land, which destroyed a farmer’s yam barn, sparking outrage among local farmers.
As the farmers confronted the hunters near the farm, more hunters from the bush joined in, escalating the situation into a violent clash.
Hunting Ban and Security Concerns
Hunting in conflict-prone areas such as Kandin, Sheini, and Nahuyili had been banned by National Security due to previous tensions. However, the hunters resumed their activities a month ago, despite the prohibition.
Group hunting, where hunters travel in trucks to various locations, is a common practice in the region. However, it has frequently led to bushfires, damaging farmlands and causing disputes between farmers and hunters.
Current Situation
- Many residents have fled into the bushes, fearing further violence.
- The injured victims are receiving treatment at the Tatale Hospital.
- One of the individuals initially believed to be dead has regained consciousness and is also receiving medical care.
Community members have expressed concerns that the incident could trigger ethnic tensions, worsening the already fragile peace in the area.
Authorities Call for Reinforcement
The Assembly Member for the area, Punala Daniel, has called for urgent security reinforcements to prevent further escalation.
With tensions still high, local leaders and security forces are working to restore calm and prevent a full-blown conflict between the farmers and hunters.
