Accra, Ghana – April 6, 2025 – The discovery of official Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at the center of a massive counterfeiting operation in Sapeiman has sparked serious concerns about regulatory lapses and the integrity of Ghana’s financial security systems.
During an exclusive crime scene tour, Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, confirmed that the money boxes found were genuine BoG property.
🗣️ “Authorities have verified that these boxes are authentic,” Jakpa revealed, raising critical questions about how state-regulated financial tools ended up in the hands of an underground syndicate.
Inside the Counterfeiting Syndicate
📌 Sapeiman Bust (February 2025): A high-profile security operation uncovered one of the most sophisticated forgery rings in recent years.
📌 Disguised Front: The operation was hidden behind an abandoned building posing as a local battery-charging shop, run by an elderly man known as the “Battery Doctor.”
📌 Massive Haul:
🔹 10 forty-foot containers filled with counterfeit Ghana cedi and US dollar notes.
🔹 Fake gold bars, some of which had peeled off to expose silver-colored metal beneath.
🔹 Two additional containers believed to be part of the operation were moved before security operatives arrived.
Manhunt for the Mastermind
🚨 Suspect at Large: National Security has launched a manhunt for the alleged ringleader, known only as “Alhaji”.
🗣️ Jakpa confirmed: “We have solid evidence linking Alhaji to both the crime scene and a broader criminal network.”
Key Concerns & Next Steps
The discovery of genuine BoG cash boxes raises concerns about:
❗ Possible insider complicity in financial institutions.
❗ Weak institutional checks that allowed the diversion of state-regulated assets.
❗ The broader impact on financial security and investor confidence.
National Security has vowed to:
🔹 Intensify financial surveillance to prevent future counterfeiting activities.
🔹 Investigate all possible insider involvement in the scandal.
🔹 Ensure every individual involved faces justice.
