📍 Accra, Ghana – April 11, 2025 — The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a new tariff adjustment for electricity and water services, with the new rates set to take effect on May 3, 2025.
Tariff Adjustments at a Glance:
🔺 Electricity Tariffs: Increased by an average of 14.75%
🔺 Water Tariffs: Increased by 4.02%
Reasons Behind the Adjustments
The quarterly review, covering the first and second quarters of 2025, is aimed at ensuring revenue sustainability for utility providers while minimising financial strain on consumers.
Key drivers of the tariff increases include:
- Fluctuations in the exchange rate between the Ghana cedi and the US dollar
- Inflationary pressures
- Rising fuel costs, especially natural gas
- Ghana’s current hydro-thermal generation mix
- The need to recover 50% of a GHS976 million outstanding revenue shortfall from previous quarters in 2024
The PURC noted that the remaining 50% of the outstanding revenue will be spread over the subsequent quarters to ease the burden on consumers.
Consumer and Provider Impact
The Commission warned that failure to recover underpayments could compromise service delivery. The revised tariffs, according to PURC, are crucial to avoiding disruptions and ensuring operational stability for utility companies.
While acknowledging the economic difficulties facing households and businesses, the PURC reaffirmed its commitment to striking a balance between consumer protection and utility viability.
