Over 20 Pupils Hospitalized After Suspected Food Contamination in Prampram Schools

πŸ“ Prampram, Greater Accra Region – April 14, 2025 β€” More than 20 schoolchildren from Prampram D/A Basic β€˜B’ and Methodist Freeman Basic School were rushed to the Prampram Polyclinic on Monday after suddenly collapsing during school hours in a disturbing incident that has shocked the local community.

Eyewitnesses reported that several pupils were seen running frantically in distress before falling unconscious. Emergency response teams and school staff acted quickly to transport the children to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention.

Preliminary investigations point to a locally made corn-based drink known as asana, sold by a vendor near the schools, as the possible cause. The vendor in question has also been hospitalized, adding weight to the suspicion of contamination or food poisoning.

Authorities Respond Swiftly

The Ningo-Prampram District Health Directorate, in collaboration with parents and school authorities, has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of the mass collapse and prevent further occurrences.

Health personnel at the Prampram Polyclinic say the affected children are under observation, with early signs indicating possible food or chemical contamination.

β€œThe safety of our children is a top priority. We are working with all stakeholders to get to the bottom of this incident,” a health official noted.

Community on High Alert

The incident has prompted calls for stricter monitoring of food and drink vendors operating around school premises, as well as enhanced public health education.

Parents have been advised to remain calm and await the outcome of the investigations while keeping an eye on their children’s health.
