NDC’s Nii Kpakpo Samoa Defends Arrest of NPP Activist Adenta Kumi by NIB

Accra, May 21, 2025 – Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team and private legal practitioner, Nii Kpakpo Samoa, has thrown his support behind the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) following the controversial arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist, Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, Samoa dismissed concerns of procedural misconduct or political harassment, describing the arrest as lawful and professional.

“When you look at the videos, I didn’t see anyone who was not clearly identified as national security personnel. They had body cams, and everything was being recorded,” he said.

Arrest Was Transparent and Non-Aggressive

Citing footage circulating on social media, Samoa said the officers were visibly in uniform, clearly identified as national security operatives, and conducted themselves professionally throughout the process.

He further noted that Kumi was informed of the reason for the arrest, and contrary to claims of a forceful abduction, officers allowed others at the scene to accompany him to the NIB office.

“The officers assured everyone that there was no intention to create disorder. So where lies the problem? Is it that the national security apparatus cannot conduct raids? Is it that they cannot invite people? Is it that they cannot arrest?” Samoa questioned.

Political Tensions and Public Concerns

The arrest of Adenta Kumi sparked public criticism and concerns over the timing and manner of the operation, with some alleging political intimidation. However, Samoa insisted that the NIB acted within its mandate, urging Ghanaians to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties without undue interference.

His comments come amid heightened political tension in the lead-up to the 2025 general elections, with the arrest further fueling debates over the role of security agencies in political affairs.
