Chairman Wontumi Could Be Freed Today as Legal Team Works to Finalise Bail Conditions

ACCRA, June 2, 2025 — The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, may be released from custody today if his legal team successfully addresses the technical delays that have hindered the implementation of his bail.
According to his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the team is optimistic that the final legal and procedural hurdles will be resolved by the end of the day to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where he has been held for five days.
Bail Conditions and Delay
Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on May 28 to the tune of GHC50 million, with two sureties to be justified, following charges that include:
- Fraud
- Money laundering
- Causing financial loss to the state
Although his team claims to have met the bail conditions by May 30, procedural delays and the justification of the sureties have stalled his release.
“We encountered some difficulties which will be sorted on Monday, then we will have a fresh slate to operate, and work towards the desired result,” said Appiah-Kubi in a media interview.
Background
Chairman Wontumi’s case has sparked political and public debate, with members of the ruling party describing the bail sum as excessive and politically charged. He was transferred from EOCO to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) last week due to heightened security concerns after large crowds gathered to demand his release.
His legal team has also filed a motion at the Accra High Court seeking a review of the bail conditions, with the hearing scheduled for June 2, 2025.
If the legal impasse is resolved today, Chairman Wontumi is expected to walk free, pending the continuation of investigations and possible court proceedings.
