Chairman Wontumi Released from EOCO Custody After Fulfilling Bail Conditions

ACCRA – June 3, 2025 — The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after meeting all bail conditions.

His release came after his legal team withdrew a motion filed at the High Court seeking a review of the GH¢50 million bail imposed by EOCO. Though Wontumi had met the bail requirements—including two justified sureties—by May 30, he remained in custody due to unresolved legal technicalities.

The motion for bail review, originally set to be heard on June 3, was officially withdrawn on June 2. His lawyers explained that the motion had been filed without Wontumi’s full consent, leading to its retraction and paving the way for his release.

Political Tensions and Protests

Wontumi had initially been invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27 for questioning. He was later handed over to EOCO, where he was detained as investigations continued into alleged offenses including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

His extended detention sparked widespread political agitation:

  • On May 29, Minority MPs staged a walkout in Parliament and marched to EOCO headquarters in protest.
  • The MPs demanded his release on self-recognizance, citing his high public profile and low flight risk.
  • NPP supporters also held demonstrations, blocking roads and chanting slogans outside EOCO’s offices.

With the legal motion withdrawn and bail conditions fulfilled, EOCO has now officially released Chairman Wontumi, ending a week of legal and political turmoil.
