President Mahama Announces Imminent Ban on Styrofoam in Ghana to Curb Environmental Pollution

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a decisive move to ban the importation and production of Styrofoam in Ghana, citing its severe impact on the environment. The declaration was made on Thursday, June 5, during the official launch of the 2025 National Tree Planting Exercise — an initiative aimed at reversing deforestation and tackling climate change.

Describing Styrofoam as one of the country’s “most harmful pollutants,” particularly due to its prevalent use in food packaging, President Mahama emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to shift toward eco-friendly alternatives. “Where you go and buy your food, and they put it in that whitish something, and you finish eating, you just dump it — that is one of the biggest polluters,” he remarked.

The President urged manufacturers and importers to brace themselves for the upcoming ban. He disclosed that the Ministry of Environment will soon roll out formal steps to halt both the importation and local production of Styrofoam products.

“We have to use paper packaging or aluminium foil for our food,” President Mahama added, highlighting the government’s broader environmental agenda to cut down plastic waste and promote sustainable practices.

The Styrofoam ban is expected to form a core part of Ghana’s environmental reform policies aimed at safeguarding ecosystems, reducing pollution, and fostering a healthier, cleaner environment for future generations.
