Accra – June 13, 2025
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has ordered the shutdown of 59 radio stations across Ghana, including prominent names like Asaase Radio, Wontumi FM, and Happy FM, for violating broadcasting regulations.
In a statement released by the Authority, the NCA cited non-compliance with the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991)—specifically Regulations 54 and 56, along with breaches of the terms and conditions of their broadcasting authorisations.
Enforcement Action Begins
This enforcement action follows a warning issued in March 2025 by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, who had revealed that 57 stations were at risk of suspension. At the time, he described the warning as corrective, urging broadcasters to take steps toward compliance.
“The suspension is not meant to be punitive but to ensure that stations comply fully with broadcasting standards,” he said.
The current shutdown is the first phase of a broader enforcement effort, based on findings from the NCA’s recent Frequency Audit Report.
62 Stations Affected
The NCA confirmed that 62 broadcasting stations in total are implicated in the audit and will be affected in phases. These stations either do not have valid broadcasting licences or have failed to meet key compliance requirements.
Affected stations have been directed to suspend operations immediately until they resolve all outstanding regulatory issues.
Upholding Standards in Broadcasting
While acknowledging the important role of radio in national discourse and development, the NCA stressed that compliance is non-negotiable.
“All licensed broadcasters must adhere to the operational and licensing conditions attached to their authorisations,” the Authority said. “This is essential to maintaining order, transparency, and integrity in the media space.”
The NCA urged all broadcasters to regularise their operations and work in accordance with the law to avoid future sanctions.
Next Steps
The NCA noted that it will publish a full list of infractions identified during the audit in due course, and invited affected broadcasters to engage with the Authority for clarification and resolution.
This sweeping regulatory action marks one of the largest media crackdowns in recent years and serves as a reminder of the regulatory scrutiny facing the Ghanaian media landscape.
