2022 Batch of Trained Teachers Suspend Picketing After GES Salary Assurance

Accra, June 24, 2025 — Aggrieved teachers from the 2022 batch of Colleges of Education graduates have suspended their picketing at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters after receiving firm assurances that their outstanding salaries will be paid by the end of July.
The group, frustrated by months of unpaid wages and delays in the issuance of staff identification numbers, massed up at the GES offices on Monday, June 23, to demand action.
Speaking to Citi News, the group’s spokesperson, Eric Darfuor, explained that the suspension follows a meeting with the Public Relations Officer of GES, who confirmed that an official communiqué had been issued regarding their grievances.
“The PRO said there has been an official communiqué from GES, so we have suspended our picketing for now, and we are hoping to receive our salaries by the end of July,” Darfuor said.
He added that the GES assured them that their issues were in the final stages of resolution, raising hopes among the teachers that payments will be made soon.
“We are waiting and waiting for the ‘very soon’—by the end of July. When the time is due and we do not hear anything from them, we will come back again stronger,” Darfuor cautioned.
Background
The affected teachers have been vocal about the financial hardships they have faced since their postings, blaming systemic delays for the non-payment of their salaries. Many of them have had to borrow money to survive, while some report being unable to meet basic personal and professional needs.
Monday’s protest added to a growing list of demonstrations by unemployed or underpaid public sector workers across the country.
Next Steps
While the group has decided to temporarily suspend protest actions, they say they will continue to closely monitor developments and are prepared to resume picketing should the GES fail to honour its end-of-July deadline.
